The Effects Of Stress And On Stress - 1454 Words
When people hear the words ââ¬Å"lifeâ⬠and ââ¬Å"stressâ⬠together in the same sentence the words alone may already be causing some to acquire more stress. Stress is very common and known by every living thing and can play a huge role in our lives. We have all experienced stress in some type of form. It is a very unpleasant state of emotional and physiological arousal that people experience in situations that are dangerous or threatening. It may also vary by its definition because it may mean something slightly different to one person then it does to the other. Stress is not always categorized in the same degree. It can be measured differently depending on age and the situation/event. Some people see stress as an emotion that causes them to worryâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦There are many illnesses that can be caused by certain stressful life events such as: obesity, diabetes, depression, anxiety, aging and Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease. Conducting the Research This research was conducted by Holmes and Rahe and it compiled of 43 life events that majority of people feel that cause more stress than others. The events ranged from minor everyday changes one may face in their life to chaotic and disastrous events. As a reference point they assigned marriage with the arbitrary number of 500 and told the patients to gauge their responses using that value. If an event called for a higher amount of stress and change in oneââ¬â¢s life than the value would be higher and if it was less stress than the value would be lower. For this research, The Social Readjustment Rating Scale was used. This scale was created by Holmes and Rahe in the late 1960ââ¬â¢s to measure the common stressors of everyday events. This scale was used to determine the value of stress in a certain event. To use the scale the individual being tested would have to add up all the values for the listed life events that were correlated with the individual, a nd if the event happened multiple times within the past 12 months then the event would be multiplied by the number of times it occurred.
